About the Practical Nursing Program

 Program Description:

       The RCCTC School of Practical Nursing is sponsored by the Russell County School Board in cooperation with selected hospitals.  The Practical Nursing Program is offered to high school seniors and adult applicants from Russell County and the surrounding counties and out-of-state applicants are considered if space is available. The Practical Nursing Program will begin each year on the opening day of the Russell County School System. The nursing program is two school years in length or approximately 18 months duration.  The first nine months of the program consists of 3 hours per day of instruction with an introduction to clinical experience. The remaining nine months will consist of a combination of a full day of clinical experience and/or classroom lecture.  Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will apply to write the National Council Licensure Examination of Practical Nursing.

Practical Nursing Course Registration:

Prospective students may pick up applications in the spring of each year. 

(Exact dates will vary and the public will be informed via newspaper and radio announcements.)

Submit a transcript of high school and/or college records or a copy of GED scores. (Minimum overall academic GPA of 2.0 preferred)

Submit a copy of immunization record.

Send or submit two (2) personal references and a current employment reference (present or past). Please use the forms attached to the application.

All qualified applicants will take a PSB-aptitude test.

Pending test scores, selected applicants will be chosen for an interview by the selection committee.

Selected Students will be required to complete a physical and dental form.

All applicants admitted to the program must provide criminal and sex offender background check as required by the laws of the Commonwealth of VA governing psychiatric health care.

Tuition and Expenses:

Tuition is $915.00 annually. Students will also be responsible for books, uniforms, equipment, and malpractice insurance.  Financial assistance is available through People Inc. and the school payment plan.

Historical Data:

The RCCTC School of Practical Nursing has successfully graduated over 200 students. The State Board of Nursing Examination pass rate for 2019-2020 Class will be posted in the Summer of 2020 after testing is completed.  Practical Nursing graduates work in many different areas of the health care profession.
