About the Class
Cosmetology is the study of the hair, skin, and nails and their related care. The Cosmetology Program at Russell County Career and Technology Center is a two-year competency-based program (1080 hours) that meets the licensing requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. The person seeking a career in cosmetology should be healthy, energetic, and have good physical stamina. The ability to get along well with others is essential.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the course requirements, the determined graduate will be able to:
Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
Practice effective communication skills, visual poise, and proper grooming.
Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employer-employee relationship.
Perform basic manipulative skills and analytical skills pertaining to haircutting, hairstyling, coloring services, texture services, manicuring, pedicuring, and other related areas of cosmetology.
Apply learned theory and technical information to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
To ensure continued career success
the graduate should continue to learn new and current information related to skills, trends, and methods for career development in cosmetology and related fields.

Industry DVDs and videotapes, periodicals, and other reference books are available to support the course of study and supplement student training. Students are encouraged to make use of these materials.
